Workshops and Co-op Placements for High School

The Burlington Performing Arts Centre is dedicated to supporting our next generation of theatre industry professionals. Our Theatre Industry Mentorship Program is designed to offer secondary students (SHSM students encouraged) the opportunity to explore the theatre industry through the following mentorship opportunities:

Co-operative Placement: Back of House Technical Production
Offered 1st & 2nd Semester

A hands-on experience for students interested in working backstage in Technical Services. The Centre's Technical Staff will mentor the successful candidate and provide training in the myriad of production duties.

Technical Workshop: Art and Science of Stage Lighting
Date: Oct. 17, 2016 / Cost: $10 per student / Facilitator: Sheridan College Faculty, Magi Oman

A hands-on, in-depth workshop for students interested in learning more about the functions of stage lighting, composition, colour theory and the different types of lighting fixtures. Interactive exercises include tracing light in painting , shading in 3 dimensions and mixing colour with light.

Career Day-Life in the Theatre Industry
Date: Oct. 25, 2016 / Cost: $10 per student
Our annual Career Day offers secondary students a glimpse into diverse careers available in the theatre industry through interactive workshops/demonstrations that illustrate the various theatre careers and the important function every role plays and affects one another. Students will also have access to the popular Lobby Market Place that is made up of leading colleges and universities that offer some of the best theatre programs in Ontario. Don't miss out on this fantastic opportunity for students to explore a career in theatre!

Technical Workshop: Creating the Sound of Theatre
Date: Mar. 8, 2017 / Cost: $10 per student / Facilitator: Jamshed Turel, Mohawk College
This workshop deconstructs the elements of sound that are incorporated in an actual musical theatre scene. While re-enacting a scene, students discover how sound is created, edited and manipulated while exploring microphone types, sound cues, effects, mixing and working with live musicians.

Facility Tours (Upon Request)
Cost: $5 per student / Minimum of 8 students per tour
Not your every day tour... this is an exceptional opportunity to experience everything from the bowels of the orchestra pit to the heights of the fly tower and all the rigging, lights and sound switches in between. Technical Services Staff will escort students throughout the venue and its two performing facilities providing a rare glimpse into the backstage, technical world of working in the future.

NEW! Shadow a Professional Technician for a Day
Date: Various dates throughout season / Cost: No Charge (1 student maximum per show)
Book your student an opportunity to shadow one of our Technical Production members as they load-in, set-up, sound-check, rehearse and start a professional theatrical performance. This immersive experience could be a chance of a life-time that in turn sparks a life-time passion for the theatre industry.
