Xara Choral Theatre uses the heart-wrenching Canadian book Fatty Legs to share a true story of the injustices of residential schools, the cruelty of those in authority and how a brave young girl teaches a lesson in human dignity. This emotionally charged performance revolutionizes the idea of the traditional “choir” by weaving together contemporary choral singing, dance, lighting, and spoken word to illustrate how the story’s hero – Margaret – evolves from a place of humiliation to one of determination and triumph over oppression.

Curriculum Connections:

  • Aboriginal dance/ movement to express cultural identity
  • Drama to communicate social/ historical issues
  • Emotional impact of residential schools
