The Burlington Performing Arts Centre Showcases Thomson’s I, Claudia
BURLINGTON, Ont. – Brenda Heatherington, Executive Director of The Burlington Performing Arts Centre, invited the youth of Burlington today to a special performance of Kristen Thomson’s I, Claudia by the Crow’s Theatre Company.
The play comes to The Centre’s Community Studio Theatre on Thursday, November 3, and is the first ticketed performance in the smaller, intimate venue. I, Claudia explores the themes of family breakup, love, grief, anger and the angst of adolescence. Heatherington described the performance as an extraordinary piece of theatre for any age group, both touching and funny at the same time.
“I, Claudia holds a mirror up to the youth of today,” said Heatherington. “I cannot express how powerful an experience it is for a young person to witness – in some cases for the first time – live theatre which reflects their own battles, frustrations and triumphs.”
The one-woman show uses four astonishingly expressive masks to map the raw but beautiful interior life of misfit Claudia, age twelve-and-three-quarters, her grandfather, her father’s new girlfriend and the school janitor.
“The masks make the performance more relatable and intimate,” said Heatherington. “They strip down the performance so that the actor almost ceases to exist and the story becomes the living being.”
Heatherington, whose affinity for youth programming began as the long-time programmer of the International Children’s Festival in St. Albert, Alberta, lauded I, Claudia as one of the best examples of Canadian theatre to come out in the last decade.
